2008 is the National Year of Reading.  To celebrate this event, which only happens every 10 years, the BBC held a storywriting competition.

We are very proud to say that our learners won two of the three North West Regional Finalists awards.  The picture shows Christine Doherty and Sylvia Kenyon at the glittering award ceremony held recently in London where they received their prizes from TV personality Vanessa Feltz.

Volunteers are Working Wonders " Helping Adults Learn To Read"

Wigan-based Skills for Life provider Working Wonders is training volunteers to help adults with low levels of reading ability.  The popular "Helping Adults Learn to Read" course is exclusive to Working Wonders. The aim of the course is to encourage people to become volunteers to help people with low levels of literacy to improve their skills.

The photograph shows volunteers who have completed the training when they received their certificates at Bramble House in Worsley Hall.  They are: Catherine Tomlinson, Catherine Pendlebury, Noel Wilde, Sylvia Kenyon and Andrea McCabe...

New technology is "Working Wonders" in outreach classes in the community

Ground-breaking wireless technology developed in Wigan, is helping Working Wonders to deliver computer courses in new locations which were previously "off-limits".
Working Wonders, community-based Skills for Life provider, asked MyTechie Solutions Ltd to devise a system that would enable IT courses - including use of email and internet - to be run in venues where there is no internet connection.  The resulting technology is now being used by Working Wonders to provide computer courses across Wigan and Leigh...

Clare completes the Race For Life 2008 
Congratulations to Clare Unsworth, one of our Literacy tutors, for successfully completing the recent 5km Race for Life event.  This is an annual national women's-only race.  The object is to raise money for Cancer Research.  Through her tremendous efforts, Clare has raised over £120 for the charity.

Two of the staff at Metrolite Industries have recently achieved certificates in Literacy through studying with Working Wonders. Tutor Clare Unsworth and manager Tom Milner were pleased to congratulate Glenys Higham and James Worral on their achievement when they were awarded their certificates this month.

 Glenys and James' achievements are part of Working Wonders' ongoing commitment to helping employees "get on" by improving their skills qualifications while in employment.
