New technology is "Working Wonders" in outreach classes in the community

Ground-breaking wireless technology developed in Wigan, is helping Working Wonders to deliver computer courses in new locations which were previously "off-limits".
Working Wonders, community-based Skills for Life provider, asked MyTechie Solutions Ltd to devise a system that would enable IT courses - including use of email and internet - to be run in venues where there is no internet connection.  The resulting technology is now being used by Working Wonders to provide computer courses across Wigan and Leigh...

Joyce Hanlon, Manager of Working Wonders said: "This technology is a very exciting major step forward.  The key for us as a community-based Skills for Life provider is that it gives us far greater flexibility.  We are now able to take learning opportunities to the people whereever that may be no matter how little there is in a venue by way of facilities for e-learning."

"For the wider community, the applications for the new system are endless; computer courses using the internet can be run anywhere, such as: hospitals, homes for the elderly, church halls, schools, community centres or any venue where an internet connection is not available to the public.  This system means that even the most disadvantaged areas can benefit from e-learning opportunities."

Dr.Stephen Hanlon, Director of MyTechie Solutions, said: "We're delighted that the system has been so successful.  Through a combination of off-the-shelf equiipment and new broadband technologies, we've been able to create an environment that can be taken anywhere, but is a fraction of the cost of the usual wireless broadband. Working Wonders can consequently channel their funds to where it matters most - the learners."
